Logs Logs Logs

If all you need is logs ...

... as The Beatles didn't sing, have a quick read of this which hopefully will answer the questions I get asked every year. By the way I don't personally sell logs any more so I recommend my mate Erwin.

For a lot of people logs are like getting a decent electric fan when it's suddenly very hot - by the time you think about it so is everyone else and getting it is a a bit of a pain.

How much wood in a load? ...

... is FAQ and a good one as it varies enormously from seller to seller. Common ones are a standard single cab Pick Up load or a Cubic metre.

A cubic metre is not surprisingly 1 cubic metre and the usual Pick Up load is 1.2 m3 so you can see which is best value if the same price.

As everyone seems to do it differently you need to ask how big is the load at the advertised price. I recommend my associate Erwin who operates out of Vernham Dean and delivers his above average 1.5 m3 loads in and around Andover.

The earlier you order ...

... the better for you. Lead time for delivery goes from a day or two to much longer in peak time November/December.

Contrary to some people's belief, Erwin doesn't sit by the phone with a truck load of logs hoping someone will call and give him something to do.

Most log suppliers ...

... are tree surgeons or forestry contractors who do logs in addition to the day's work, usually delivering evenings and weekends. Pictured below is Erwin loading the rack of his firewood processor on a summer evening.

The next stage is feeding ...

... the beast. There is a standard size of logs - 9"- other lengths are time consuming and in some cases too much agg!

This produces a pile of logs ...

... as below but the truck still needs to be loaded and time found to deliver.

You can order by ...

... ringing 01264 737 655 - this is likely to be an ansaphone & Erwin will call you back but probably not until he is ready to arrange delivery.

Logs are usually tipped ...

... on your driveway. This is typical of all the professionals as they just don't have the time to stack where you want them.

Hope this is helpful. I no longer do the half loads ... too much effort but if you are local to Vernham Dean Erwin will usually be persuaded to drop a smaller load if you don't use many logs - negotiate a price with him.
